The University of Miami/UHealth Department of SCCC has an exciting opportunity for a Full Time Biostatistician 2 to work at the UHealth medical campus in Miami, Fl.  

CORE JOB SUMMARY
The Biostatistician 2 provides advanced statistical support and implements new strategies and analysis options with project PIs. The Biostatistician 2 prepares written reports to document analytic activities and summarizing results and participates in the development and the testing of efficient protocols for the collection, verification, management, and analysis of large amounts of genotypic and phenotypic data. Further, the Biostatistician 2 serves as liaison between the more junior Biostatisticians of the department and the research community.

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS
1. Finalizes analysis plans and writes detailed specifications for analysis of files, consistency checks, tables, and figures.
2. Communicates with clients regarding statistical analysis issues.
3. Prepares data, conducts statistical analysis, and summarizes results for large research projects.
4. Interprets analyses and writes statistical sections of study reports.
5. Prepares results for progress reports, presentations, and peer-reviewed publications.
6. Maintains and documents studies’ databases.
7. Consults with study investigators on planning and specifying statistical analysis.
8. Provides support to resolve barriers to analysis and consults with other methodologists and statisticians.
9. Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

Education:
Master's degree in relevant field required

Experience:
Minimum 5 years of relevant experience required

Department Specific Functions

The biostatistician works with Dr. Ye and other Biostatistics and Bioinformatics Shared Resources (BBSR) faculty to provide support for study design, data management, complex statistical and bioinformatic analysis, clinical trial implementation, and result interpretation, aiding Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center investigators in research and patient outcome improvement.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide statistical expertise in the design of research studies, including the specification of hypotheses, intermediate to advanced study design, and preparation of statistical analysis reports with moderate supervision.
  • Contribute to the development of operations and procedures for data collection, cleaning, and management with minimal supervision. Collaborate with research teams on the design and implementation of research projects.
  • Develop preliminary analysis plans and provide feedback to and incorporate input from supervisor and collaborators in reviewing and refining analysis plans. Implement planned analyses using a range of statistical methods and technical skills to analyze and interpret data, and participate in more complex methods as needed.
  • Effectively communicate with supervisor and collaborators; present analysis results to collaborators during meetings; actively contribute to the preparation of written reports and oral presentations summarizing data analysis results, grant applications and renewals, and publication of research projects.
  • Engage in continual learning and develop content area knowledge in their work areas.

Department Specific Qualifications                                                                                     

Education:

  • Master's degree (MS) in Statistics or Biostatistics (preferred).

Experience:

  • A minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience in biostatistical analysis, bioinformatics, or statistical research methodologies, including expertise in applying advanced statistical techniques to real-world datasets.
  • Demonstrated expertise and experience working with clinical trials, observational studies, and animal studies. 
  • Experience with omics data (such as genomics, proteomics, metabolomics), and bioinformatics tools.
  • Proficiency in R programming, with extensive experience in utilizing R for statistical analysis, data processing, and visualization.
  • Publication record demonstrating contributions to applied statistics and biomedical research.

Knowledge, Skills, and Attitudes:

  • Statistical Analysis (Expert): Deep understanding of statistical theory and methodology, with hands-on experience in descriptive statistics, univariate testing, propensity score methods, meta-analysis, Bayesian inference, and a wide range of regression models (linear, logistic, Poisson, negative binomial, lognormal, Cox, mixed-effects, GEE, penalized).
  • Data Management (Expert): Skilled in managing large-scale, high-dimensional datasets, including omics and electronic health records (EHR). Experienced in data acquisition, integration, preprocessing, and quality assurance.
  • R Programming (Expert): Extensive experience coding in R, including use of RStudio, RMarkdown, and Bioconductor packages for statistical analysis, reproducible research, and bioinformatics workflows.
  • Machine Learning (Proficient): Proficient in machine learning techniques (e.g., unsupervised learning, random forest, XGBoost, neural networks, regularization).
  • Communication (Advanced): Strong ability to communicate complex statistical concepts to interdisciplinary teams. Experienced in presenting results at conferences, workshops, and team meetings.
  • Bioinformatic Analysis (Preferred): Experience with omics data analysis, such as gene differential expression, bulk and single-cell RNA-seq analysis, GWAS, PheWAS, and MeWAS.
  • Computing Skills (Preferred): Proficient with Linux-based computing environments and high-performance computing clusters.
  • Peer Leadership (Advanced): Demonstrated ability to mentor junior biostatisticians and support statistical components of collaborative projects.
