Summary Objective

The purpose of this position is to respond to crime scenes and identify, document, collect, process, and preserve evidence; secure and store evidence according to department guidelines while maintaining the chain of custody and integrity of evidence.

This class works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.

Essential Functions

The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.

  • Responds to crime scenes or situations under investigation where there may be considerable risk involved.
  • Searches for, collects, photographs, and preserves evidence.
  • Examines and documents crime scenes for physical evidence, such as latent fingerprints, hair, fibers, blood, projectiles, shell casings, and tool and tire marks.
  • Maintains control over physical evidence gathered; records and stores evidence in department; processes evidence for identification information; and transports evidence to state crime lab for further processing.
  • Tests green leafy material by chemical means and by utilization of digital microscope for the purpose of reporting and testifying in court as to the presence of marijuana in questioned materials.
  • Prepares a variety of records and reports including supplemental reports of investigations and statistical reports.
  • Responds to subpoenas; testifies in court regarding evidence collected at crime scenes, the condition of crime scenes, and the methodology employed in the collection and testing of evidence.
  • Maintains availability by radio, telephone, for consultation on major emergencies/incidents as assigned; and availability for on-call during non-working hours as assigned.
  • Purges evidence when approved by Court.
  • Prepares approved firearms for auction or destruction.
  • Performs related work as assigned.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

  • High School graduation or GED equivalent.
  • Two (2) years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Physical Demands:

Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.

  • Performs medium work that involves walking, standing, stooping, jumping, dancing, stretching, or lifting all of the time and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or exceptional skill, adeptness and speed in the use of the fingers, hands or limbs in tasks involving very close tolerances or limits of accuracy.

Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken.

  • Involves routine and frequent exposure to:

Bright/dim light; Dusts and pollen.

Extreme heat and/or cold; Wet or humid conditions.

Extreme noise levels, Animals/wildlife.

Vibration; Fumes and/or noxious odors.

Traffic; Moving machinery.

Electrical shock; Heights.

Radiation; Disease/pathogens.

  • Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.
